Chhattisgarh is one of the leading states in the country in terms of fish seed production. Now private sector units are also coming up in the field of research on fishes. A Fish Research Center has been established in Rampur village adjacent to the capital Raipur with the technical assistance of Thai scientists. Dr. C. Suvarna, Chief Executive of the National Fisheries Development Board, is on a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh, during which he inspected the aqua genetic center of fish farming in Rampur village of Balodabazar-Bhatapara district. Besides, Dr. Suvarna also inaugurated a large private fish feed center with a production capacity of 100 tons per day, established in village Baikoni of Simga development block of the same district by Mandal Aquatech Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Suvarna met women groups and farmers in the field of fisheries and appreciated their works.

Chief Executive Dr. Suvarna appreciated the work being done by the Government of Chhattisgarh to promote fisheries in the state. He also lauded the better implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana in Chhattisgarh. He congratulated Chhattisgarh for winning two national awards for fisheries. Dr. Suvarna appreciated the fact that Chhattisgarh is making a rapid and scientific progress on every component of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Here the work of fish farming in open mines by women groups is inspiring.

It is noteworthy that this center of Aqua Genetic has been established by joint venture of M Hatchery Raipur and Manit Group Thailand. In this research center, Scientists from Thailand will not only offer technical support for research but will also provide training in this field. Spread over an area of about 100 acres, main focus of this research center is to conduct research on genetics of fish as well as production of tilapia fish seed. Besides, fish farmers will also be given training in the latest techniques of fish farming. This is the first center of its kind in Chhattisgarh and the country to be set up in the private sector.

The research center set up in village Rampur will enable the farmers of the entire country including Chhattisgarh to supply quality fish seeds. With this, Chhattisgarh will make rapid progress in the field of fish production. Moreover, this fish feed center would enable the farmers of the state to have easy access to fish feed locally at a low rate.

Dr. Suvarna, CE of National Fisheries Development Board, also observed the fish farming being done through cage culture method in closed mines by Kherwari women self-help group of Simga development block. 12 cages have been prepared by the group for fish farming. The cost of this project is Rs 36 lakh. For this, 60 percent grant has been given under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and 40 percent from DMF. During his stay, he also visited the large biofloc unit located at village Pikridih of Tilda development block of Raipur district. It is noteworthy that for its establishment, farmer Mrs. Anju Mishra has got 60 percent subsidy under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The total cost of this unit is Rs. 50 lakhs. Tilapia and horn fish are being reared in this unit.
