The lok sabha on Wednesday passed a bill granting reservation to women on the one third seat in lok sabha and state assembly withh near unanimity amid demand from the opposition to extend similar benefits to other backwards classes and immediate implemation of the measures before the elections next year.

After spirited eight hour  debate in which 60 members participated, the lok sabha passed the constitution 128th amendment Bill with 454 member voting in favour and two against it. Prime minister Narendra Modi was present during the voting on the the bill.

The bill was passed as per the provision of article 368(2) of the constitution relating to the passage of constitutional amendment Bill which requires support of the  majority of the total membership of the house and majority of not less than two third of the members present and voting.

A few amendments moved by the government relating to the numbering of the constitution amendment Bill were also cleared by the house. When the proposad legislation goes to rajya sabha for its consideration. it will be called the constitution 106th amendment bill official said.

The bill propose 33% reservation for women in lok sabha and assembly of state and nct of Delhi similar reservation bill also be provided within the receives reserved for st and sc. The bill proposed that the rears will continue for 15 years.

Smriti slams opposition over demand for immediate implementation of quota 

Union minister Smriti Iranian  slammed  the opposition over its demand for an immediate implementation of quota under womens reservation bill asking in whether it wished to follow the constitutional process.

Intervening in the discussion on the constitutional amendment Bill to provide a reservation for women, the women and child development minister hit out at the position and such as the Samajwadi party for demanding reservation for ministries saying they do not know the reservation based on religion is prohibited by the constitution.

Responding to opposition demanded the reservation be implemented with immediate effect Irani read out a provision of the constitution regarding census and meditation to drive home the point that it very necessary to include in the bill. Implement immediately-Mayawati

Samajwadi party president Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP government of bringing a "half baked" womens reservation bill and shirt that women of the country will give a be fitting reply by voting against it in the coming elections.

In a post on x, the SP president also accused the central government of commencing the very first session in the new parliament building with a "grand lie". "when the women reservation will cannot be implemented without the census and delimitation, which will take many years, then why did the BJP government need to lie to women," Yadav said.

Women's reservation will incomplete without OBC quota - Rahul Gandhi 

Expressing support for the women's reservation Bill in lok sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi batted for its immediate implementation and said that the legislation is "incomplete" without provision for Kota for obcs.

Participating in a discussion on the bill, Gandhi also made a strong pitch for a caste census. Hi claimed that out of 90 secretaries of the Government of India, only three are from OBC and control only 5% of the budget, which he said was an insult to the backward classes. Recalling the discussion on sengol and the transfer of power from the British,the former Congress chief said revoluntary answer that the freedom movement gave to the British was transfer of power was the people of India.'It's been a constant transfer of power, more and more and more power to the people of India on one side and the other side, the counter Idea dirty tax away power from the people of India," Gandhi said.

"This is the fight that is going on. And in fact, in many ways, it is  taking a place today. A huge step forward in the transfer of power to the women of India was panchayati Raj,. Where they were given reservation and they were allowed to enter the political system at scale," he said.
